As a Certified Public Accountant I've learned through the years that getting to the bottom-line and understanding the importance of the what and the why of the numbers that make up the bottom-line are all of critical importance. So what’s that got to do with the Lenten season?
In a reading from this week’s lectionary St. Paul reminds us of the life of Abraham where he says: “He (Abraham) did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. And therefore it was #accounted to him for righteousness.” Romans 4:20-22
This word #accounted is from a Greek word λογίζομαι which is translated #accounted and carries the meaning of “to count, to conclude, to come to a bottom-line”. This Lenten season we are reminded that God invites us to turn to Him and believe in His promises. Upon that sincere commitment of faith He comes to the #bottom-line and counts us as righteous and empowers us for good works.
During these weeks of Lenten reflection we would do well to look up from that spreadsheet and contemplate the real bottom-line of life.
