As we navigate the complexities of postmodern life, it's easy to fall into the trap of believing that "living our truth" means sin is a thing of yesteryear, a quaint idea from the past for Sunday School children. But the reality is that sin is part of the human experience. This Sunday's Lenten reading offers us valuable insights into the nature of sin and its impact on our lives. The Psalmist uses three words to help us understand the cause and effect of sin. Transgression - breach of trust; sin - violation of expectation; and iniquity - treating God unfairly resulting in His offense. Understanding the nature of sin in this way is a powerful catalyst for personal and professional growth.
When we acknowledge that we all fall short of God's expectations, we can begin to look to Him for His mercy, lovingkindness and forgiveness. This 5th Sunday of Lent, Christians around the world focus on the Cross of Christ as we read: "Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me." Psalm 51:1-3 Let's take a moment this week to reflect on these powerful words, and embrace the transformative power of acknowledging and repenting of our sin.
