Movies and television often depict Jesus with a gentle and compassionate personality - and He certainly was. But Jesus also despised and detested religious hypocrisy, greed, and pride. It seems we could be exposed to the same indignation Jesus expressed during His spring cleaning. This third Sunday of Lent we read a well known story from Jesus’ ministry: “Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them, ‘It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer (for all nations),’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ Matthew 21:12-13
The word drove in this passage comes from a strong Greek word (Ἐκβάλλω) which means to throw out with force; to cast out with urgency; to compel with strong language. This Lenten season let’s take a look at the other side of Jesus’ personality and ask what needs to be cleansed from our lives. And let’s recommit to using His house as a house of prayer for all nations.
