Twentieth SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

One often wonders, “Why’d I just say that?” or “Why did I slide back into that disastrous pattern of behavior so quickly?” The reason is our faulty thinking due to years of harmful patterns established in our thought processes. This is a serious issue for all of us and for our society at large. Psychology Today's article entitled “Recognize the Cognitive Distortions that Lead to Conflict and Breakups” (December 2022) dealt with how to recognize, but not necessarily how to correct, a harmful inner thought life. But this Sunday’s reading gives us the direction we need. It’s not adjusting our old thoughts, but replacing them with a biblical mindset from which we can now view all of life: “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8 It’s sort of like trying to adjust an old set of glasses v. having your simple and successful eye surgery. Begin a new perspective on life and a new life journey today by reading, studying, memorizing and meditating on God’s Word.
